411 West

411 West Italian Café is located on the West End of Franklin Street in the heart of Chapel Hill, NC - home of the University of North Carolina, and a short drive from the Research Triangle Park and Raleigh-Durham regional airport. Opened in 1990, 411's menu is inspired by the flavors of Italy and the Mediterranean, with a healthy California twist. We make our own fresh pasta on premise, and our delicious thin crust pizzas are baked in a wood-fired oven imported from Italy. The menu features traditional Italian favorites, but we are best known for our creative pasta dishes, fresh seafood and steaks, and seasonal specials inspired by the bounty of our local farmers. Our fantastic desserts are all made in-house, and our wine list is extensive and affordable. 411 West is a member of the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, a Green Plus certified business, and recipient of the Sustainable Business of the Year award from the Foundation for a Sustainable Community.

411 West was recently named "2011 Best Italian Restaurant" by Chapel Hill Magazine, and also received the "2011 Best Pasta in the Triangle" award from the readers of The Independent.

Our Mission

As with the entire Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, 411 West strives to provide the value of quality service and outstanding food at an affordable price. We are committed to creating the best possible dining experience from our first contact with the guest through the end of the meal. We have also chosen to accomplish our goals sustainably, and we are proud of our efforts to become a leader in our industry. The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group was named "Sustainable Business of the Year" in 2007. All our restaurants use compostable to go containers, bags, bar stirrers etc in an effort to protect the environment. 411 West, Spanky's Restaurant & Bar and Squid's Restaurant participate in a food recycling program. Mez Contemporary Mexican, our newest restaurant was the first Green Plus certified business in the United States, and was the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-designed restaurant in North Carolina.

Biographies

Tommy O'Connell - GM / Partner in 411 West, Spankys Restaurant and Squid's Restaurant

Tommy started with our company in 1987 as a dish washer and server at Spanky's Restaurant while attending UNC. After graduation he began working full time and through hard work, dedication and ability became a manager. In early 1990, when plans were being made to open 411 West Italian Café, Tommy was offered a position as Floor Manager. He helped open 411 in October of the same year and has remained a valuable member of our management team. Tommy became the General Manager in 1997 and a partner in 1998. He is a certified sommelier and has taken several continuing education courses on wine at CIA Greystone in St Helena. He works tirelessly everyday to insure 411 West remains one of the premiere dining destinations in the Triangle area. He also serves on Chapel Hill's Downtown Partnership Board and three other town committees.

Maria Oviedo - Floor Manager / Events Manager

Maria began working at 411 while in 2013. She has worked in several capacities in the restaurant showing a keen interest in helping organize larger parties. She was offered the position of floor manager and events manager at 411 in February of 2015. She has since organized over a hundred events for us and is always willing to assist guests in making their event unique and as personalized as possible.

Jon Dowse - Executive Chef

As a reward for years of loyalty and outstanding work, Jon was named Executive Chef at 411 West in April of 2012. A Sous Chef since 2009, Jon started at 411 as a Pantry line cook in 1997. He is a natural leader with a passion for food and a deep appreciation for the overall customer experience. His attention to detail combined with an unwavering standard for excellence and an ability to offer calm, efficient action in any situation has made him an integral part of 411 West's day to day operations. When he is not contributing his talent and expertise to your next amazing meal at 411 West, Jonathan enjoys spending time with his family on their beautiful Chatham County farm.

Miles Duggan - Chef

Miles has returned to 411 West to assist his good friend, Executive Chef Jon Dowse. He most recently worked at Squid's Restaurant after a long and successful run as Chef at Spanky's, where he and his staff provided high quality, all-American favorites to restaurant, bar, and banquet customers. Miles started his career at 411 West in 1996 as a line cook and then worked through all stations in the kitchen to accumulate a full range of culinary skills. In 2000, Miles transitioned to the position of Sous Chef at 411 West. In 2002 he accepted the position of Chef at Spanky's Restaurant.

Mark Tachman - Pastry Chef

Mark has been a pastry chef for over twenty years, beginning in the San Francisco Bay Area, then South Carolina, and eventually here in the the Triangle. He helped open 411 West in Chapel Hill in 1990 and 518 West Italian Café in Raleigh in 1996, and his expertise and culinary skills are evident in the elegant desserts featured at all our restaurants. Outside of his 411 duties, Mark has taught baking classes at several locations in the Triangle, contributed to the Baker's Dozen Cookbook, and has aired food commentaries on NPR's Morning Edition and WUNC's State of Things. Mark has been an integral part of the success of all the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group locations.
